Good afternoon, AU family!
I have so much good news to report regarding Wayne's recovery from surgery last week!
Today was a HUGE day! Physical therapy had him doing chair pushups (dips), etc. Then came Speech therapy & he was able to put the one-way valve on his trach & surprised the therapist with the strength of his voice! He got his reward - that much hoped-for cup of ice chips! (He has had nothing by mouth since last Wednesday).
Cheeky monkey! He had asked for some water & a swab to rinse his mouth out... As I turned my back to fetch something else, I caught motion out of the corner of my eye... the sly bugger had taken a sip from the cup!
He will officially start liquids tomorrow, but they want to be sure he's not leaking into any tissues anywhere from the mouth.
He is cleared to get a wheelchair, even with all the IV pole, He's very keen to get rolling since I told him it would reduce the swelling in his arms & hands...

I will call right now. I've been waiting, but Wayne has the TV on while he's sleeping (aaarrrgh!), and I've been up & down, fetching & suctioning & adjusting sheets & blankets, getting him ice, etc.
I won't sleep until I get home, most likely, Sis, but at least I can lie down full length! The 1950's-era "recliner" in the other room was a torture table with wooden arms to make your elbows nervy & achy...
But I'm good with the pull out loveseat. The end extends & you use the back cushions to make the "bed." I can stretch out & rest my back at night, at least. One would think a hospital such as this would have more ergonomic furniture, but I'm just grateful to have a place to rest my back.
Once we get home, away from the machines beeping, woosh-wooshing, and people coming in for finger sticks & vital signs...
He will sleep just fine in his own cushy bed & I will sleep in the recliner so as not to disturb...
His recovery will progress by leaps & bounds then!

Amen, Sis!
When the Rock Star Doc came in & asked how we were doing, I said, "He's go the devil by the tail & he's biting him in the ass!"
That's the attitude you have to have to deal with this stuff.
When I was going off the unit the other day, I heard someone say, "That poor man! His wife is so hard on him!" (This was SICU.)
I turned around & said to him, "This man is a WARRIOR, not a soyboy! If I were a soft sop & coddling him, he would hate that. He doesn't need mothering; he needs a coach, & preferably with a branding iron in one hand & a bull whip in the other!"
The couple looked shocked, but I could tell the guy understood.
Wayne doesn't want coddling; he wants to get better & get out of here. My job is to help him reach his goal.
You don't get there by saying, "Honey, baby, just please take a bitty sip of the nice water." LOL
You say, "Drink what you can, because I don't want to have to pour it into you, darling."

You should have heard me last night, when the day nurse told me that, in his personal opinion, the bedside Doppler was sufficient. Oh, no, he did NOT know to whom he was speaking!
My response:
"WRONG! Dr. Hasney was very specific with me & stated that the intraoral Doppler was to be used every 2 hours to check the patency of the newly-grafted blood vessels. If the vessels fail, the graft fails. You don't want to be responsible for that, do you? If you don't want to do your job, honey, I am SURE I can find someone else who WILL!"
I got the stinkeye.
When the docs did the next rounds, the nurse was in the room & I spoke up & asked about 2-hour Doppler checks. Dr. Freeman said I was right & that tomorrow the schedule would be 4-hour checks.
Then I gave An, the day nurse, the stinkeye.
Then it was time to hassle the residents & get them to take out the JP drain on the left side because it was not draining anything and had not for 2 days...

The residents LOOKED at me as if thinking "How dare she speak?"
I continued, "The thing is like teats on a bull - useless. Either get it functioning or get it out of him. As it is, it's nothing but a hazard because it keeps getting caught in all the cardiac leads, stomach tube, implanted Doppler, and IV."
Then their eyes got big as teacups & one guy's mouth fell open!
They removed the useless JP drain, though. (tee-hee!)
I worked in hospitals for 30 years. You gotta take those residents down a peg or two at every opportunity, and remind them they're still human, lest their egos risk of overinflation. 😉
I have never seen this in other countries; it appears to be an American phenomenon.
I was much pleased when the ENT specialist came in today & chatted with me as if I were a colleague... He had brought an "end cap" to cap Wayne's trach & said if he was oxygenating well & breathing comfortably, after 24 hours, they will remove the trach & close it.
Love little v

Hey, girl! I'm so glad you only spewed, LOL!
Get ready... Go empty yer bladder, Sis!
So Wayne had been up to the bathroom & he was back in bed & I was arranging his covers, because it's freezing in here... He has to keep that thigh open to the air so it will scab over, but all the nerve endings are raw, so it hurts if anything touches...
So, I'm covering his legs, putting a twist in the sheet & blanket to leave the leg open but cover his chest & left shoulder... And I lean in to arrange the shawl over his other shoulder & tuck it behind him...
and the mean old cuss farted.
I couldn't blame him because, as any mother who has fed a soy baby knows, that stuff is worse coming out than it was going in.
The vapors slapped me upside the head like a mallet, LOL. I drew back & coughed & caught my breath, the said, "Damn, boy! A word of warning, please, so I can back away!"
Claims it snuck up on him, with a totally straight face. I told him next time he gets the sandal.
