I stopped eating all processed food. If it is in a jar, can, package, box I don't eat it. Saves a whole lot of waste and money. We have a local butcher grocer here that has all fresh and local products. Fresh whole chickens never frozen and they will cut it up for free. Whole milk pasteurized with the cream still in it. Fresh veggies grown by local farmers. All grass fed beef. The owners are local people been here for decades. Chris makes whole hog sausage very lean that is the best ever.

Given the choice ... that's absolutely the way to do it.
One of the earlier basic 'rule's of thumb' back in the day was shop the perimeter of a grocery store ... stay out of all the isles in the middle .. ;)
