It is possible that giant trees once existed (Devils Tower possibly) but Monument Valley doesn't fit this theory.

If you view the area from the air you will see that the sandstone layer (topped with petrified dunes) which, where it starts to erode away from a flat plain, becomes Arches NP, then Canyonlands NP, then MV NP. As one flies south you see that the layers which begin contiguous with only cracks, then the cracks get wider with arches, then wider yet making canyons, then the layer is nearly gone until only individual monoliths stand out.

There is no geological mystery in MV NP.
