Dentists are disgusting - nothing they do saves your teeth, it just destroys them. Do everything they tell you and you will have no teeth left (they cap teeth that could be filled, do root canals that lead to infections, do poor extractions that lead to cavitations. First question they ask is what insurance you have - that should tell you something. Just another ripoff. Use baking soda and hydrogen peroxide to brush with - not toothpaste.
