Minutes before their deaths, two criminals hung next to Jesus on the cross. One of the criminals mocked Him, but the other one trusted in Him. Jesus told the one who trusted Him that he would soon be in Heaven. He received grace.

You see, we've all sinned and fallen short of God's holy standard. We all need His grace, but we haven't all received His grace.

So are you trying to be good enough for God? The bad news is, you can't. You can't ever be good enough on your own. But the great news is, Jesus has already made a way. However, you can't simply know that He was a real person or think that some of His teachings were nice.

The most important question remains: Will you make Him the Lord of your life?

I know that my friends and I take a night every year before Christmas and go out to look at the lights on the homes in surrounding neighborhoods. And we are far, far, far away from being children! In the dark of winter, these truly symbolize the light of Christ as our light shines on the path we are called to follow and also shows us the areas of darkness we need to eliminate if we are not going to stumble on that path. John talks about Christ as the light in both his gospel and his letters to remind us we need Jesus' guidance as we journey towards Him and walk as children in His light.

I want to encounter You in my difficult circumstances--believing that You are near me in my troubles. I need to unplug my emotions from all the problems and plug them into Your Presence. By connecting with You, my dark mood grows steadily lighter and brighter. Also, as I remain in You--plugged in to Your radiant Presence--You enable me to see things from Your perspective.

I can be joyful even during adversity by staying connected to You. There is abundant Joy in Your Presence!

He tells them first that the Lord is faithful. This means that God doesn't change--He is consistent in His character. If He was good and merciful yesterday, He will be good and merciful again today.

It also means that He fulfills His promises. God is faithful to do what He says He's going to do. He is not like a human who changes his mind when things get difficult.

Second, Paul tells these believers that God will strengthen them and protect them in the midst of what they're experiencing. Paul does not tell them they will never experience evil, but rather--that God will be with them in the midst of it.

Because God never changes, He is able to strengthen and protect us through every experience in life. So take some time to thank God for His strength and faithfulness. Ask Him to help you, and to give you confidence in His power.

While so many people will be out exchanging gifts and looking for after-Christmas sales, what can we do to give the gift of self to someone? Maybe we need to visit a friend or relative we haven't seen in a while or make a call to that person in our lives that we've neglected. If it did snow, maybe a neighbor needs some help. If there are still leaves on the ground, maybe you could rake them. Perhaps some left overs would be enjoyed by the elderly man or woman who lives alone? Let's take some time on this Feast of Stephen to remember the importance of serving others, and find a way to do it.

In You I live and move and have my being. Every step I take, every word I speak, every breath I breathe--all is done in Your watchful, embracing Presence. I'm immersed in Your invisible yet ever-so-real Being! The more aware of You I am, the more alive and complete I feel. Please strengthen my awareness of Your loving Presence as I go step by step through this day.

When you are dissatisfied with your behavior, you tend to feel unworthy of My Love. You may unconsciously punish yourself by withdrawing from Me and attributing the distance between us to My displeasure. Instead of returning to Me and receiving My Love, you attempt to earn My approval by trying harder. All the while, I am aching to hold you in My everlasting arms, to enfold you in My Love. When you are feeling unworthy or unloved, come to Me. Then ask for receptivity to My unfailing Love.
