I find myself focused on the gold...

Gold is a great conductor, one of the best.

It is why it features in computers, and stereo equipment.

What if, what resides within, is a very advanced piece of equipment, probably extra terrestrial, given to guide humanity?

The ancient peoples would have viewed high tech as 'god-like'.

But, of course, humans being human, the power it possesses was used by evil - until it was won back by the forces of good.

Power itself, is not good or evil... it is how it is used that defines that.
