Your family are probably good people who think that everyone else is good people too. It's very hard for people to go against a premise that builds the foundation of their thoughts. When they compare what you are saying against the surety of their belief that people are good, or at least not evil, it feels to them like you are saying something crazy. Something atrocious will shake that belief, but they will fight it until it's undeniable that there are a shitload of evildoers out there.
