Yup, as am RN for 50 years I was privileged early in my career to work with some outstanding doctors. The majority of them actually took a cause based approach to the care of their patients. Some would refuse to give prescriptions until the patient made a sincere effort to make life style changes like lose weight, stop smoking, exercise, improved diet, reduce stress etc. Most patients were on no prescription medications. Over my career that changed drastically. Caused based practice changed to symptom based practice. It was very upsetting to witness. Many nurses took on the responsibility of educating their patients and encouraged life style changes, comfort measures instead of pain medications, dietary information etc. 😇
