Had to look up overton window, learn somethin' new everyday:
The Overton Window theory is a model for understanding how ideas in society change over time and influence politics. It states that politicians are limited in what policy ideas they can support, and they generally only pursue policies that are widely accepted throughout society as legitimate policy options. Any policy falling outside the Overton Window is out of step with public opinion and the current political climate, and formulated to try and shift the Overton Window in a different direction or to expand it to be wider. The theory has become a key concept used to explain the rise of Donald Trump and Brexiteers, and is important to understanding how the winds of political discourse change. The Overton Window can both shift and expand, either increasing or shrinking the number of ideas politicians can support without unduly risking their electoral support.
