I have been through one hurricane. We were told:
- tape an X on windows to help the vibration from shattering
- secure “everything” outside that could become a projectile
- a couch flipped on its back can help barricade from flying glass
- hurricanes can spawn tornadoes
- tap water may not be safe to drink for a few weeks
- back half of the storm blows the other way & can snap weak trees

Taping the windows was proven to be of no use if the glass gets blown in or a projectile comes flying through, and it's hard to get off and leaves a residue not easy to clean. I wouldn't bother.

Keep the place closed tight is the key. Some think that leaving windows open helps to equalize the pressure as it drops and it drops- ears pop, no fun. Open windows make it worse and will ensure blowouts.
