I have been doing the same (!) mine goes back to 2007 though (and some as early as 2000!). I was horrified about blind acceptance of Obummer and how anyone who criticized him, including those of us who are minorities, were summarily called: Racists! I really agree with your analogy of "like studying for an exam." In some way this research and connecting the dots as I call it, helps us participate in ole school learning of liberal arts, and practicing the Socratic method. THIS can only be good as it moves many in the culture away from "a-muse, (to not-think!) to questioning everything, and not just routinely drinking the Kool-Aid!
