Interestingly enough, ancient idol worshippers believed the idols they made were inhabited by other gods (bad spirits). This is why they performed ceremonies to "open the mouth" of the statue or idol. The mouth and nostrils had to be ritually opened for the demon spirit to move in and occupy, a notion inspired by the idea that one needs to breath to live. Once the mouth was opened and passed through, the evil spirits (demons) could be localized for worship (which was probably unbeknownst to the people that walk through that open mouth and walked right into that Satanic sacrifice). .
