Your name at birth used to be called your Christian name. And your family name was your Surname. The surname was not attached until death so your heirs could claim their family inheritance. When you combine the two you become a "corporation" of the two, the living and the dead. You are then a fiction and a fiction is not a living man or living woman, only the living can claim an inheritance. If no one claims it it becomes awarded to the state or a "ward" of the state/government. You get "last rights" at death and then why would you use your dead name or your "Last" name in life?
