I remember my first mid-term freshman year, in Folklore & Mythology, a topic I was genuinely interested in, but which was considered a "gut" (easy) class.

I got a D on the exam, & despite knowing the material, the Teaching Assistant (a portly, middle-aged redheaded gal with glasses who was not a particularly compelling guide chided, "It doesn't matter what you think" in response to my expressing an opinion on the mid-term.

That was a low blow, but now I understand. "Education," even at Harvard, was about indoctrination & regurgitation, not original thought or critical thinking. It was just one of many sour notes in my 4 years there.
