‎Waitangi Day 2026: What’s Open, Surcharges And Events

New Zealand marks Waitangi Day each year on 6 February, commemorating the first signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in 1840. In 2026, Waitangi Day falls on a Friday, meaning most workers are entitled to a paid public holiday and a long weekend.Unlike Easter, Christmas Day, or Anzac Day before 1pm, Waitangi Day does not come with mandatory trading restrictions. As a result, many businesses across the country will operate largely as normal.
