I'm no spring chicken so I know this wasn't 1980. More like the 50's maybe early 60's. In 1956 my father purchased a small starter home for $19,000 in Cincinnati. We moved in 8-9 years to a 4 bedroom house because there were 7 Catholic kids by then for about $45,000. In 1980 I don't know what kind of cheap new car you could buy for $5000. You could buy a decent used one. I don't remember how much groceries were but around $20 may be about right.
