It depicts a human man in a chess match with Satan, the man looks forlorn and frankly broken because the devil using guile, ridicule and deception has convinced the man that he has lost the match and will lose his soul.
However, under close scrutiny it is revealed that the man actually had the ability to defeat his opponent, though he didn’t realize it yet. His king had one more move.
