A huge fire broke out in Copenhagen, Denmark as the city’s former 17-century stock exchange building burned.

The Borsen building, located in Copenhagen, was undergoing renovations and was covered in scaffolding and plastic when the blaze started.

The fire was so powerful that the 54-meter spire, sitting atop the historic building, fell to the streets below.

The centuries-old building housed historical treasures, leading to bystanders assisting workers to save as many artefacts as possible.

Director of Emergency Services Jakob Vedsted Andersen made no “guarantees” that the exterior of the building could be rescued.

“The facades are still standing but they are starting to give way as the construction burns away. We are trying everything we can to protect the facades, but we cannot give any guarantees,” he said.

“It’s a copper roof, and it’s simply impossible to get under that roof, so the fire has plenty of time to build intensity.”
