I don't get it either...they had a few good songs, but otherwise I don't understand the hype.

Exactly.
I never fell for the big rock acts in the 80's either.
Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, Def Leppard...their music was basically garbage.
I always preferred the lesser-known "underground" bands myself.
