My heart is breaking for my sister . I feel and so does she that they murdered her husband in the hospital . He fell in a store yesterday they said he fell hit his head and went into cardiac arrest they broke a couple ribs giving him cpr . By the time I got to the hospital they had a vent in him and were waiting for life flight , by the time the guys come in for life flight he moved his feet a little and was trying to open his eyes . My sister and her son went to be with him at the other hospital and they told her he was brain dead so when they took the vent off she said he opened his eyes and couldn’t talk but moved his lips told her he loved her she said he looked so scared and in pain but she told the nurses he wasn’t brain dead he was communicating with her and they told her some times it takes awhile to go and the nurses looked at each other and the one nurse came over and put something in his iv and a few minutes he was gone . This is a nightmare . These hospitals have to be sto

Attempting to communicate clearly shows he was not brain dead. A brain dead patient cannot form words. Get his medical records immediately. Look and see who ordered the medication injected, and what the medication was and dosage. Write down all events and time-lines.

This nurse should have reported this information from the family to the doctor and he should have reassessed the patient before any further interventions were ordered. There can be very subtle neurological changes that can occur in head injury patients. Awakening typically occurs slowly with such things as blinking, small weak movements, subtle changes in vital signs.

If it was a narcotic it would have to be accounted for, signed out and in a permanent accounting procedure, be it a sign out book or an electronic sign out from a dispensing machine. The narcotic count would have to be correct. The patient ID must be entered. If it was a sedative drug like versed it should have been recorded. All meds are required to be recorded. A written doctors order would be needed for an RN to give any medication. A nurse is required to record all medications, interventions etc. To not do so is failing to follow acceptable practice and can result in the loss or suspension of the nursing license. Having Been an ER/ Critical Care nurse for 50 years, I know what the standard of acceptable practice would be in this situation. The fact that this nurse did not immediately check her patient for this poasible significant change in neurological status and report what she heard from the family is appalling. She should have done a neuro assessment.
