The Olympic was damaged beyond repair due to a series of unfortunate accidents. She was patched up and switched with the Titanic, the 'accident' was planned (possible bomb on board though, no iceberg collision) so to collect the insurance money thereby saving White Star Line and Haarland & Wolffe shipyard from going bust. It also conveniently got rid of three highly influential men who were the greatest opposition to the creation of the Federal Reserve - They happened to be on the ship at the time of the sinking. The Fed was created the following year.
