At the beginning of this summer, I developed peripheral neuropathy. I am not diabetic, so I was puzzled about the cause. It got so bad, that I went to the ER. After finding all my labs normal, the ER doctor said it could be due to a vitamin B6 imbalance. This is not the type of problem my primary care physician would want to explore, so I studied everything I could about B6 deficiency and B6 toxicity. I was also having insomnia (likely due to an increase in GABA at night ) - caused by elevated plasma PLP levels - PLP is the chemical - pyridoxine-5'-phosphate - used to supply B6 in supplements and fortified grains. I decided my issue was due to pyridoxine (B6) toxicity. I removed all sources of B6 from my diet - not just from supplements, but also fortified grains. Fast-forward to August, no symptoms of peripheral neuropathy or insomnia.
