Did they sell to other companies?
There was a company here in the US, that held student debt notes, they voided all debts to them, but other companies took the notes, so, there was a pause, but the debt was eventually still due, just to different companies, than the one the original debt was taken out from.
Mortgage companies do the same, only they sell the notes to others.
