Very much like many others have a hierarchy structure that requires some to study and know much and followers to know little.
Avoiding, disliking pragmatism
Reaching a higher consciousness is only for the few...
Whilst the future will show that every human has a christ nature and can make the two one. etc. etc.
No lifelong study needed to grasp the concept....
It's the Guru trap, projecting that other can not reach where they are. Whilst not providing guidance far all to reach their unique version of higher self, their spirit(uality)
