Hallel was his original name @divinedirtclod - it's a long research thread but basically, EL is another name for our creator, God/Jesus/Holy Spirit. The prefix to EL is named by God when He created the Heavenly beings and is a special attribute unique to that creation's character. Think Micha(EL), Gabri(EL), Uri(EL), etc

We get the word Hallel-u-(JAH) [yet another name for God] because it spoke to Hall(EL)'s character. To cut this short, hastan (we call him satan) was the new name given him following the fall from Heaven. Just like Saul became Paul or Jacob became Isra(EL) the names are changed as they move from citizens of Earth to Heaven. God chose to change the names of the fallen angels from citizens of Heaven to Earth (opposite direction).
