"If the children and I went on ahead of the President and Mrs. Kennedy, John would always keep an ear out for the arrival of the helicopter with his father on board. Often we went down there on a Friday afternoon, and the President joined us on Saturday morning. That meant John hovering all the time around the landing patch, looking up in the sky for the first sight of the whirlybird or the first sound of its clattering blades. When he heard it, he used to dance with delight.

"The chopper's coming, Miss Shaw," he would pipe. "The chopper's coming."

As soon as it landed and the motor stopped, John used to bound across to greet his father, and they had a little talk together on the tarmac. But very often on those relaxed weekends, John dragged his father ... to the helicopter hanger, and there they would play games.
