Why was dominion updating a machine on Election Day and who has the hard drives?

My answer would be so they could eliminate any incriminating evidence and as for the hard drives, my bet would be the SoS knows exactly where they are and she also knows who leaked "passwords" that only SHE knows! That whole thing was a set-up and not a very good one!
