if covid-19 can't be isolated, how are they identifying the variants, like Delta?

There are no variants because there is no original. You can't identity something or test for something that's never been isolated. In 2008 or so the AMA published their complete list of known diseases, viruses, etc. Among those listed was corona viruses. They categorized them as...the common cold.
