It's a good skill to have.
If there isn't garden space, A jar and some water is all that's needed to sprout beans, mung beans, lentils, radish, alfalfa, Clover, chick peas, etc.
It takes about 2 days for the seed to sprout, it's easy, inexpensive and there is a ton of nutrition.

No worries about light. I grow mine on the kitchen counter - pics below. I soak the seeds in water overnight, then strain and rinse 2x a day for 2 - 3 days. I just use a bowl and a strainer.
