The white color visible in many images is large quantities of salt from the evaporated sea water. Since the time this city was an active metropolis it has risen 1,600-1,700 feet above sea levels as have many areas along plate boundries. There are even prehistoric shells on top of Mount Everest . So at one time time was below sea level.
