The context here is important. Jung was talking about self-discovery in his "Guide to Happiness." That is, not being shaped by the imperatives of others, but recognizing what the inner impulse says. Many refuse to do this by giving control to others. No matter how much their ten senses resist. Looking inward means trusting your own answers and not letting others destroy them, as religions do, for example.
