If you think about it, the size of those trees might be somewhat proportional to the size of the giants back then. Perhaps like we are compared to the redwoods, the giants were compared to those huge trees. Fascinating stuff... to be alive at this time when so many hundreds of generations have come and gone... it's just amazing. Perhaps those that have passed are watching the show as well, just from another realm.
