That’s a question with a long history of interpretation.
From a biblical perspective,
• 2 Corinthians 4:4 calls the adversary “the god of this world,” who blinds minds from seeing truth.

• 1 John 5:19 says, “the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.”

• By contrast, scriptures also affirm that God ultimately owns and rules all creation (Psalm 24:1: “The earth is the LORD’s and the fullness thereof”).

So theology holds two truths in tension:
• Evil has real sway in human structures—greed, deception, and pride often drive systems.

• That sway is temporary; divine sovereignty will reclaim and restore what’s been twisted.

In simpler terms, the “world system” often reflects the spirit of self‑exaltation and exploitation, while God’s kingdom reflects humility, justice, and care."
