The Bronze Serpent Wasn’t Random—It Was a Type and Shadow of Christ
In the wilderness, Israel was being bitten by venomous snakes. People were dying, and there was no natural cure. Instead of removing the snakes, God gave Moses a strange instruction:
“Make a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live.” (Numbers 21:8)
This wasn’t magic. It was prophetic. The judgment was already present. The venom was already in their bodies. Healing didn’t come through effort, medicine, or works—it came by looking in faith at what God provided.
Centuries later, Jesus explained exactly what this sign meant:
“As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up.” (John 3:14)

The serpent represented the curse and the consequence of sin. Jesus, though sinless, would be lifted up and made to bear that curse for us. What brought death was placed on the pole, and looking at it brought life. (God made him who had no sin to *be* sin for us…”-2 Corinthians 5:21)
The bronze serpent quietly preached the gospel:
Healing is not earned.
Healing is not achieved.
Healing is received by faith in Jesus Christ.
