The ruling Jews did not want to acknowledge those benefits, for giving up their power, so, they arranged to have Jesus turned in as a problem to the Roman's - his popularity being used as the reason he should be seen as a 'threat' to Rome.

Pontius Pilate tried to adjust the optics by having the MOB chose who they wanted freed... they picked what THEY saw as a war leader (Barabas - called a robber - but he robbed the Roman's not the Jews.)
