According to the article they didn't actually clone the dire wolf, they changed the DNA of a gray wolf to mimic the dire wolf.

Josh Gates Discovery Channel "Expedition -" one show had Josh in a special room in a Lab where cloning of animals was being done.
The special room was purposed for the cloning of a wooly mammoth.
