Days into the Battle of Los Angeles, before a haze of smoking Waymos, and with no small business owner safe (unless you were selling books or Father’s Day cards, I’m assuming) the legendary “Mr.” Katy Perry fired off a message to his 203 million followers on Instagram: “This was once Mexican land,” he said, “and the people being targeted today are often descendants of those who have lived here for generations.” Of course, all of this is totally wrong. Los Angeles was settled by the Spaniards long before Mexico existed, and no, the mestizo who descended from Aztecs are not the same thing as the Chumash. But the position has been widely echoed by activists and, increasingly, media talking heads, which means it’s safe to say the insurgents, in a conflict escalating across the country, have discovered their new origin myth: Illegal Aliens are not Illegal or Alien at all.
