How Metformin Helps Control Blood Sugar

Metformin is a widely prescribed medication for managing type 2 diabetes. It works by lowering blood sugar levels in multiple ways. First, it reduces the amount of glucose produced by the liver, which is often elevated in people with diabetes. Second, it increases the body’s sensitivity to insulin, allowing cells to absorb and use glucose more effectively. Lastly, metformin slows the absorption of sugar from food in the intestines, preventing sharp spikes in blood sugar after meals.

Unlike some other diabetes medications, metformin does not cause weight gain and has a low risk of causing hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) when taken alone.
