food production
security
public buildings (baths, library, forum, circus)
This was expensive, they levied taxes to pay for it.
However, today, we fund human slave trading, money laundering, and not the betterment of our living conditions.

Not having to carry water 3 miles on your head, along a dirt road, would, I think be felt as an improvement, to the women I think.
Having access to a library, and a place to bathe in fresh water, toilets that were not stinking holes in the ground...
As I said - if the money is spent to better the community, a tax, or (as Trump wants) a trade levy is not a bad thing.
But, as with everything evil takes over - the resource stops being used for the community, and becomes nothing more than funds for evil...
Evil loves making us pay for our own demise.
We must excommunicate the evil.

All subjective. It led to the population explosion and now they want to depopulate using technology and change humanity. I'd say modern day technology is more of a hindrance in many ways, it made people lazy and evil but I suspect it was all God's plan. Waiting for that millennial kingdom to come where it's all wiped away. The New Heaven and New Earth.
