I got my ham license during covid lockdown's but in an emergency you don't need a license
I am tuned into some local repeaters with guy that have home bases that can talk around the world - I just have hand held radios

You may be very close to a Repeater and 5 watts would be sufficient. A lady was in South Carolina and reaching into NC because she had elevation and signal.
Signal to noise ratio should be considered in a purchase... Squelching sensitivity...UHF/VHF
Various Reasons...

It depends on one's needs...
One's level of desires.

In the evening the folks get on and talk about the different details about availabilities for radios, their experiences, their suggestions...
I think Thursday evening they do sell/swap meet.
It's a great way to learn what folks have, learn terminology, their knowledge about equipment, supplies supporting each other to have range desires.

These folks are extremely kind to help a person learn, especially newbies on the radio frequencies.
