Every town is capable of sustaining life and their needs. A lot of equipment and facilities have already been built to maintain the needs until people populate again.. When the first settlers came to America the pioneers had the basics and did well building and spreading throughout the land. Just a little over a couple hundred years ago America went from mostly vast open lands with Indian populations sparsely throughout the United States. Still to this day if you drive across America there is so much land that is not occupied.

However I believe things will be fine and a lot of this information is just scare factors to wake people up.

The one thing we need to consider is the insurgents within the group of illegals. They are all just waiting in hotels all over the country to be called to action. There are also reports of military grade weapons being stock piled across the country. Have to wonder about all those empty Walmart stores. With reduced US military presence, millions of armed insurgents on our soil will be a real problem. Yeah we have over 300 million guns in this country but organizing militia when social media is censored against an organized UN force will be very difficult.
