The Government Accountability Office published the conditions in a scathing new report, confirming complaints made by many service members for years.

Airforce bases sold all their on base housing to companies - who now want to rent them to civilians...
At one base, the comopany did a good job maintaining, at another, a terrible job...
We got a waiver to live off base because the house they allocated to us was terrible. (Commander housing).

Usually Commander Housing is above the others, or so I thought/read? I guess it depends on which base? I am not military, I just have a family Ancestry that has it.

They used to be, because normally you would not have the choice of where to live.
That was before they sold it all off... and, of course, they charge the entire BAH, for every house, so there is no saving.
When we lived off base, we would shop around for a house at a reasonable rate, under the BAH max, and that gave us some more savings.
