How To Pick The Best Watermelon 🍉 😋
Many do not know this. Farmers differentiate their watermelon by gender. The males are bigger and have an elongated shape and taste "watery". While the female watermelon are smaller, rounder and taste very "sweet."
Also look at the tail for ripeness. If dried up it is ripe but a green tail indicates it was picked too early and may not be ripe.
Lots of "webbing" marks shows a lot of bees touched the pollinating parts of the flowers and will result in a sweeter watermelon - pick the ones with lots of webbing.

I read the sweeter watermelons have a mark on them from laying on the ground. The bigger that mark the sweeter it will be. Is that the webbing you're referring to?

Good info...I always do the tapping method & seems to work out most times, but love the other suggestions to verify the tapping😀
My Mom used to take a straw and place it on the watermelon and if it settled parallel to the watermelon then it was good, if not it was bad! Go figure🤪
Thanks for sharing this👏

That sounds like a good idea to try. So, a plastic straw?

Gayle, the webbing is kinda like brown scratchy marks on outside rind. But, you're right about the "sweet spots" where watermelon has laid in the field that yellowy patch tells you it will be a sweet, juicy melon too!
