From what I heard Juan O' Savin saying in one of the interviews was the reason Nixon took us off the gold standard was that it made gold available and inexpensive at that time for everyone. As for the trade with China that was all GHWB. He was the unofficial ambassador to China. From reading things it may seem that not only does gold and silver have monetary value but also medicinal.

One of the things that pointed me to gold being medicinal as also silver (colloidal silver) is the story in the Bible of when the three wise men (Magi) visit the baby Jesus with gifts of Frankincense, Myrrh and GOLD. We've been told that frankincense and myrrh were fragrances and oils which they are because they come from plants but they can actually be used for medicinal purposes as I believe gold (colloidal gold) is also.
