Without having more medical information and risking her privacy, there are many reasons why she is suffering this edema. When she presented with breathing issues, they would have rushed her onto corticosteroids to open airway passages. These have a tendancy to cause large swelling in an emergency situation.

Swelling like this can also occur from intubation and oxygen flow into the lungs. The surrounding tissue absorbs the oxygen yet can cause a bloating effect. Once they determine the cause of her medical trauma - they will adjust her meds and fluids.

She looks rough to you now - but she is held closely in the palm of God's hand and all you can do RIGHT NOW is trust HIM. Make sure you rest, HYDRATE, and find a quiet spot to calm yourself and gather your thoughts. She is in good hands. Believe that she truly is as God is always in control.

Thank you for making some sense of this...I would be horrified to see my child this way. Shouldnt the drs be explaining that to her as well?

In many hospitals, you're pushed aside while they rush to treat and it's not to be mean or inattentive, it's because they have to work fast to stabilize and stabilization can take some time. You have to understand also that they are just seeing her for the first time again at that moment, they have no answers. Department specialists are called in as quickly as possible and they have clinics with schedules. They rush as fast as they can. Hospitalists (like Dr. House on TV) exist and a large hospital like this one will have many.

In OU, she's in great hands. She is not in any danger of wrong protocols. Time is needed to assess her and they don't have any answers yet.
