We lived through a chlorine spill in 2005 in my town in SC. The water, vegetation, soil, air and any metal object within a 5-mile radius was contaminated (all metal rusted almost immediately). 9 people died and countless others died over a 5 to 10-year period of cancer and lung illnesses. The railroad got away with it and the media covered up much of that. However, local activists took charge and refused to let the story lie low. WE THE PEOPLE of the community took charge and ultimately received millions of dollars from grants in 3 separate national universities. Research Graniteville train derailment of 2005.
