There is an older TV show called Fringe that touched on this subject and while fantastical in some aspects, I believe most of it to be correct. There are parallel Earths, many far more advanced.
When our body dies, we have the choice to incarnate back to our planet of origin, or to incarnate back to the Earth we just left, but if our frequency was raised during that period, we can incarnate to the next Earth level.
When the 'event' occurs here in the next probably 8 years, the majority of the population will 'shift' to the new 5D earth. Those of true darkness, those who brought this planet to where we are now, those who have intentionally harmed us, they will not shift. They will stay here amid the destruction they created and when they die, they will incarnate back here on 3D earth.
Humanity will survive just as our ancestors did in the last shift and the ones before. This is our last waking dream.
