It gets even more interesting...
"Before and during WWII, Darby Island was owned by a rumoured Nazi sympathiser and British hotelier, Sir Guy Baxter. King George of England gifted the island to Baxter upon his knighthood and it served as a lucrative plantation for him with livestock, cotton, palm oil, and more.
In 1938, he built an 8,000 square foot “castle” on the highest point of the island. According to some elderly locals, they remember seeing strange flashing lights during the war coming from the rooftop of the castle. Allegedly, it was discovered that Baxter was guiding German submarines prowling the Atlantic Oceans, allowing them to take refuge in Darby Island’s “exotic network of caves.”
There are other rumors, such as ports for submarines and a radio transmitting station, but the historical record is strangely short on any information about Sir Guy Baxter."

I don't know. I read that the island was gifted to Sir Guy Baxter after being knighted. He built the castle and Nazis would go there, hang out, bury treasure, but seems no one knows for sure. Baxter allegedly had royal connections. The story goes that he had an elaborate radio station there and neighbors saw strange flashing lights to possibly signal U boats. Stories say he left the island with his mistress never to be heard from or seen again. Some say an enraged mob from surrounding islands forced Baxter to leave.
Rick Davis from Palmetto, Florida is the owner of the island. Don't know who he is. Darby island does have a neighboring island owned by magician David Copperfield.
The story gets more and more bizarre...

I can't find much on a Rick Davis in Palmetto. I read that the island may have been bought and sold several times until Davis bought it. I think he has owned it since the 1990's.
“There are still giant poured concrete moorings,” Davis said. “Nobody knows why they’re there but I believe it was for the submarines.”
