In 1962, JFK met with members of the American Indian Chicago Conference, who had convened the year before to discuss the needs and conditions of Native American people throughout the country. The result of this week-long conference was the Declaration of Indian Purpose, which outlined the objective of self-determination for Native people and became the foundation of Native activism.
