The company was founded in Geneva in 1783 by Johann Jacob Schweppe.
He produced carbonated water, which he sold to doctors. Because it is said to have a healing effect, schweppes drinks were added with different flavors. The variant with quinine was called Tonic and became a most popular drink, because it was a healing cure for malaria with zinc supplement.
